Aug 15 was a very productive workday for our volunteers on the trail.
The “Dirty Dozen” volunteers indeed got dirty! Except for a pile of metal, plastic and concrete debris beside the guardrail at the bridge, the entire trailhead south of the boat launch ramp is ready for some temporary seeding until we secure a grant to begin trail construction. The old warehouse is gone, reduced to ashes and the salvageable lumber hauled away. The west side of the trail north of the boat launch ramp is mowed and ready for contouring and seeding. Still remaining to be done is to smooth out the east side and move the tree trunks to the east to dry and burn. Kayakers are finding the previously obscured launch ramp and it is finding daily use. Although not open yet, bikers traveling the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail are braving the Foxburg to Emlenton connection. We must caution however, this section of trail is not officially open. You ride at your own risk and we do not have easements yet with all adjacent landowners.
We welcome volunteers who are interested in working the section of the trail north of Shoup Trucking. We have some pretty big goals set for that section to complete by the end of Oct. We eagerly hopeful of being awarded a DCNR grant to begin preparing the first mile of paving. The more progress and community involvement that we can demonstrate, the better the chances of winning the grant. So, please consider donating, volunteering work or materials. All donations and members are welcome.
